Cooperative Childcare
Parents are involved in the
classroom, upkeep of the center, and collectively make
decisions with teachers on how the center is run.
Resolving
Conflict
We fell that children need to
learn to solve their own problems rather than
having adults always imposing solutions. When
conflict arises (e.g. arguing over who can play with a
toy), children are given an opportunity to suggest
solutions that everyone can agree to (e.g. taking turns
with the toy). As children learn to resolve
conflict for themselves, intervention of adults is not
as necessary.
Exploratory Learning
Children at
Seward
are encouraged to learn through hands-on experiences,
creative activities, and "explorations" that allow kids
to choose topics of interest, share their knowledge, and
develop higher-level thinking skills.
Fostering Diversity
Seward
Child Care encourages a diverse group of families,
students, and teachers, and teaches an anti-bias
curriculum to help foster a community that celebrates
diversity in all its forms.
Outside Play
Children play outside every
day, including winter, unless the weather is
exceptionally cold or wet.
