Why a Co-operative?

At SCCC we believe that:

  • parent’s involvement with their child’s education helps both child and parent learn and grow.

  • working together in and for SCCC fosters important opportunities to meet one’s neighbors, to exchange information about community resources, and to share in the learning experiences of children.

  • a cooperative child care center environment enhances a sense of community, cooperation, connection, and responsibility in the larger community.

  • modeling these values to children fosters their own positive value development.

Co-operative Commitment

As a child care co-op, SCCC values and depends on the help of member families to ensure the center’s smooth and successful operation. Families with a single parent or guardian contribute two hours per month to the center, while families with two parents or guardians contribute four hours per month.

Family contributions can take the form of Parent-Helper Shifts (washing dishes, sweeping, doing laundry, etc.), Parent Jobs (maintenance, tech support, community outreach, etc.), or a position on the Board of Directors.

Parents put their skills to good use by working on maintenance projects, deep cleaning the classrooms, sprucing up our outdoor areas, and planting our garden beds.

We also want to ensure that every member of our co-op has a voice in how the center is run. To that end, we hold two General Membership Meetings every year. These meetings provide an opportunity for families to vote in new Board members as well as weigh in on financial decisions such as tuition adjustments. Free childcare is provided for each General Membership Meeting.
